Recovery after upper eyelid surgery: day by day, honestly

Anyone who tells you that you can “walk straight back out” after eyelid surgery is not being fair to you. Recovery is very manageable, but it deserves an honest story: two weeks in which swelling and bruising are simply part of the process.

The first days (day 0 to 3)

Right after the procedure the eyelids are swollen and sensitive. Bruising around the eyes is normal and may increase for the first days before it fades. Cooling according to the clinic's instructions reduces the swelling. Reading and screen use are allowed, but the eyes tire faster. Sleeping with your head slightly elevated helps.

The first week (day 4 to 7)

The swelling clearly subsides and the bruising changes colour from blue-purple to yellow-green. Around day 5 to 7 the stitches are removed. Many people do not feel presentable yet in this phase; plan social and work commitments generously around it.

Week two

Most visible traces fade. If you work from home or at a screen, you can usually return to work after one to two weeks. We advise against sports, heavy lifting and sauna for the first two weeks. Make-up on the scar is usually possible after stitch removal, in consultation with the clinic.

The months after

The scar in the eyelid crease is pink and palpable for the first weeks and fades over months. Judge the final result only after about three months. Sensitivity to light and wind, or a pulling sensation, can occur in the meantime and almost always resolves.

When should you contact the clinic?

• Increasing pain, redness or swelling after the first days.
• Fever, or a wound that opens or leaks.
• A sudden change in vision.

In those cases, contact the treating clinic immediately. A good clinic is reachable for this and has arranged it with you in advance.
