When is eyelid surgery not a good idea?
On a platform run by a clinic you might expect mainly reasons to operate. This article does the opposite, because an honest assessment beforehand is worth more than a satisfied sales conversation afterwards.
When the cause lies elsewhere
The most important reason not to operate: the complaint is not caused by excess skin. If the eyelid margin itself droops (ptosis), if the eyebrows sit low, or if the complaint is mainly bags under the eyes, upper eyelid surgery will not solve the problem. We explain the difference in this article.
Medical reasons for postponement or extra caution
- Dry eyes or eye conditions. A correction can worsen dry eye complaints. This should be assessed beforehand.
- Blood thinners and clotting disorders. These require coordination with the prescribing physician; sometimes surgery is possible, sometimes not.
- Active thyroid problems, particularly eye involvement in Graves' disease: the condition must be stable first.
- Smoking slows wound healing. Stopping around the procedure is the minimum.
- Previous eyelid surgery makes a new assessment more complex; there is less skin reserve.
When expectations do not match
Upper eyelid surgery calms the look of the eyes and opens the field of vision. What it does not do: remove crow's feet, solve under-eye bags, lift the brows or make you ten years younger. If you are mainly unhappy with your appearance without clear excess skin, this procedure rarely makes you happier. A good specialist says so beforehand.
When the pressure comes from outside
A cosmetic procedure is only a good idea if you want it yourself, for reasons that are your own. Doubt, haste or pressure from others are all reasons to wait. Your eyelids are not going anywhere.

FAQ
Am I too old for eyelid surgery?
Age itself is rarely the limitation; overall health and the condition of skin and eyes weigh more heavily. It is an individual assessment.
Am I too young for eyelid surgery?
Under thirty, real excess skin is rare. Often heredity or something else plays a role. That is exactly when an honest assessment beforehand matters, so you are not operated on unnecessarily.
